Banyan Tree Samui is built around a sheltered cove on the Lamai side of Koh Samui, with villas stepping up the surrounding hillside. The private pool is the common thread, but the view, bedroom arrangement and position on the slope make the room category an important part of the decision.
Start with the view you are actually booking
The resort’s official accommodation range distinguishes garden, partial-ocean, ocean and higher hillside categories. Those names should be read carefully. A broad aerial photograph explains the setting, but it does not mean every villa looks directly over an unobstructed sea panorama. Trees, neighbouring rooflines and the direction of the terrace all belong to a hillside resort.
The Deluxe Pool Villa is listed at 130 square metres with a king bed and garden outlook. Its official description specifies an open bedroom and living area, an outdoor lounge deck, and a bathroom with double vanity, rain shower and bathtub. This is a useful option for someone whose priority is private indoor-outdoor space rather than a sea-facing position.
The Ocean View Pool Villa is also listed at 130 square metres with a king bed. Significantly, the official description speaks of glimpses of the ocean within tropical greenery. It is sensible to take that wording literally. The category adds a sea connection, but it should not be confused with a guarantee that every part of the terrace has a completely open horizon.

A family category changes more than the name
The accommodation list includes Family Deluxe, Family Ocean and Family Horizon Hillcrest Pool Villas, each listed at 169 square metres with a king-and-twin arrangement for four standard occupants. These are different propositions from simply putting another person into a one-bedroom villa. The Sanctuary Pool Villa is larger again, at a listed 316 square metres with two king beds.
For a family or two couples, the arrangement of beds and sleeping spaces deserves as much attention as the view category. Confirm the category’s floor plan and the ages and number of guests accepted in your exact rate. A large total area, particularly when outdoor space is included, does not by itself tell you how separate the bedrooms feel.

The hillside is part of the experience
The Agoda photographs show villas scattered through trees above the beach, with paths and roads linking different levels. That arrangement creates a strong sense of landscape and separation between buildings. It also means that a villa, restaurant and beach can sit at quite different heights.
Recent guest accounts add a practical qualification. A June 2026 Trip.com review described requesting buggies and usually receiving one within about five minutes. Another account published on the same platform on 4 October 2026 found the location and buggy arrangements somewhat inconvenient. These are individual experiences rather than a guaranteed waiting time, and together they show why the transport system can matter even at a well-equipped resort.
If steps or sloping paths are difficult for anyone in your party, ask about the route from the proposed villa to the facilities you plan to use. A buggy can reduce some journeys without proving that every final approach is step-free. The most useful answer will concern the assigned villa and route, rather than the resort in general.
Who gets the most from it
Banyan Tree Samui is particularly compelling for guests who expect to spend meaningful time in their villa: swimming privately, sitting outside and returning to the same cove setting through the day. Choose the garden category because you like its enclosed greenery, or a sea-facing category because the particular outlook matters to you; neither decision needs an assumption based on the resort’s highest viewpoint.
For a stay built around frequent outings, weigh the hillside transfers alongside the villa itself. The property’s appeal is easy to see in the cove photographs, but the best booking is the one whose bedroom layout, view wording and access arrangements match the way you will actually spend your time.
